But for now the HDHR hardware is a non-starter and anything that requires it (Plex DVR, HDHR DVR) is also a non-starter.Ĩ.1 + WMC should last me at least a few more years.

If SiliconDust would release a real 6-tuner device (not a 2x3 tuner device that requires two cablecards), I'd have to seriously think about switching. I much prefer my Ceton InfniTV 6, even though Ceton is pretty much dead at this point. The problem is I can't use it, because they only support HDHR cablecard hardware. I'm a lifetime PlexPass customer (I bought a week before prices doubled, 3 or so years ago), so I believe I have access to the DVR functionality.

If I decided I needed to upgrade to Windows 10 on my WMC machine, I'd install NextPVR and use Kodi as a frontend. The PVR interface has come a long way in the past ~2 years, and since I don't use any copy protected channels it satisfies my needs well enough. I currently have ServerWMC running alongside WMC feeding a couple of Kodi boxes as "extenders" replacing aging Xbox 360 consoles, and that's worked out quite nicely.

Yes, it takes a little work to get it setup well, and it doesn't have a nice backend like Plex to keep things in sync (I use a database to share watched status and in progress durations, and have a headless server periodically scanning for library updates, but it's all pretty hacky), but once you get it set up I've found it's a much better player than Plex or similar (for example, you get full control over resolution, refresh rate, audio, etc).

Windows 8.1 - Aside from not wanting to install a product that'll become obsolete in the near future, I have no way of downgrading from a clean install of Windows 10 to 8.1 or older.Ĭaveat: I'm still running Win8.1 Pro with WMC, and will do so for the foreseeable future. WMC - I attempted to install it in Windows 10 per the instructions I found online, but it seems that there's no longer a way to get it to work with a CableCard anymore in Windows 10. It detects the tuners and scans channels properly, then doesn't tune to any channels in the interface. It looks like something that comes with one of those cheap media streaming boxes, is not intuitive regardless of which of the 50 skin/theme packages I've used (which my family has let me know repeatedly) and is convoluted in regards to installation with the HDHomeRun prime. Kodi/Mediaportal - After using WMC/Plex, the interface for Kodi/Mediaportal is just sloppy. Plex DVR only lets you watch programs that have already been recorded, so no tuning, pausing, or program guide. Plex - a great GUI and cross compatibility, but it just doesn't work for Live TV. What's the best replacement for all of these uses?Ĭomputer is a Windows 10 server/client with i7 7700k, 64GB RAM, Radeon 390, 1TB SSD, 5TB storage for media, SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime CableCard tuner. Now that Microsoft killed off WMC in Windows 10, I'm having a hard time finding a decent alternative. I used to use WMC for live TV, Movies, Music and pics.
